NHK’s Cool Japan

Ofschoon de Japanse regering ‘Cool Japan‘ niet als exportproduct financiert en stimuleert, heeft omroep NHK het wél begrepen: Zij publiceren wekelijks de reeks met de titel Cool Japan, met interessante en vlotte programma’s over onderwerpen als manga, anime, Harajuku fashion en games en zetten daarmee de coole kant van Japan in de zon.

NHK World is een Japanse internationale omroeporganisatie die onderdeel is van Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK), de publieke omroep van Japan. De informatieve en wervende programma’s van NHK World TV zijn gericht op het buitenland en de programmering wordt ook via internet uitgezonden. Naast de serie Begin Japanology is er de reeks ‘Cool Japan’, deze mikt op een jonger publiek dat zich te goed wil doen aan al die hypes, subculturen en stromingen die samen inderdaad Japan “Cool” maken.

Cool JapanDe reeks Cool Japan wordt al ruim zes jaar uitgezonden. Wie de lijsten met topics van de beide programma’s Begin Japanology en Cool Japan met elkaar vergelijkt, ziet veel overeenkomende onderwerpen. De insteek van Cool Japan is echter anders, waar Begin Japanology voornamelijk culturele tradities uitlicht, poogt Cool Japan jongeren te betrekken bij de verschillende facetten van de Japanse samenleving zoals deze in de afgelopen vijftien jaar vorm heeft gekregen. Begin Japanology heeft het format van een documentaire, Cool Japan is even informatief maar met name ook een praatprogramma waarbij de twee hosts, Kokami Shoji en Risa Stegmayer, een panel van in Japan wonende buitenlanders aan het woord laten die samen commentaar geven op het in de uitzending behandelde onderwerp.

Cool Japan bekijken?

NHK World TV biedt de afleveringen van Cool Japan aan als een streaming-service op haar website of via de app voor iOS en Android. Ook op Youtube worden de afleveringen gedeeld, niet perse door NHK maar door liefhebbers.
