We are pleased to announce the exhibition “Kokeshi Art Unveiled,” the final exhibition of 2024 to be held at our JICC!
This exhibition, co-organized with Fakapapa Shop , showcases the rich tradition and incredible diversity of Japanese kokeshi – handmade wooden sculptures with a legacy dating back to 1830. Featuring rare and unique dolls, the exhibition celebrates both classic forms and bold, creative interpretations that emerged during the 1960s renewal movement in Japan.
Kokeshi dolls, originally crafted as toys for children and souvenirs, have evolved into display pieces admired by adults. Each kokeshi features a simple yet elegant design—consisting of a single wooden head and body—but no two are alike. Every doll has its own distinct facial expressions and patterns.
