A journey to Japanese paper, local material culture and future prospects of craft practices.
In this multimedia lecture visitors will be guided through the fields, workshops and material cosmos of Japanese handmade paper. It is based on the recent publication ‘Washi Futurism’.
In 2019 design studio Cream on Chrome visited paper artisans in Japan, as artists in residence, and formed a lasting collaboration with the craftsmen So Kubota and Masaru Nishita. The team was joined by designers Satomi Minoshima and Pauline Agustoni, forming the collective ‘Washi Futurism’. Their publication under the same name explores past, present and possible futures of the traditional Japanese paper ‘Sekishu Washi’.
