Expositie “What is There” door Fumie Onuki

When viewed from the front, Fumie Onuki’s works appear at first glance to resemble the shoji screen doors that are a familiar aspect of Japanese traditional architecture.
When looked at from the side, however, they reveal themselves not as shoji lattices but as clusters of box-shaped objects of varying depths and with uneven surfaces.

Each of these box-shaped objects is covered with handmade Nepalese paper.
In the translucent parts of the paper, which have the unique texture of handmade paper, we can see plant-like green objects, but it is difficult to identify what they are clearly.
In addition, washi Japanese paper is used as the supporting base for the green substance, and on this paper, a large number of fine short lines have been drawn close together with pencils and pens of various colors, as if to lay the groundwork for the painting before applying the green color. (These details can only be seen if you look at the reverse side of a work.)
